The only problem you may have is some of the units that burn gas for fuel also use electricity to make their thermostats operate. In this case the thermostat would not be able to send the signal to the unit to provide more heat. You can install a generator to power the thermostat in emergency situations and you will always have heat when you need it.
Electricity is a clean source of energy and so is the mains gas that supplies these units. The fuel burns clean and has no discernible odor when it is burning. It does not create smoke so your house will not have the smell of smoke in it. The one drawback is that you have to have the lines that carry the gas periodically checked for leaks. The mains gas supplier can send someone to your home to do a pressure check on your lines and try and determine if you might have a leak. You can also check fittings that connect heaters, stoves, and other appliances by squirting a small amount of liquid dish detergent on the fitting. If gas is leaking at the fitting the dish detergent will form bubbles. When this happens you need to get a technician to come and see if the fitting needs tightened or replaced.
Electric fueled items can also have problems, but they are more likely to flip the electric breaker in your home and warn you that they are having trouble. The electric versions are also more likely to cause a fire than the gas versions are.
